MCCALLA, AL (WBRC) -

Concerns of burglaries and robberies in McCalla may be remedied with more law enforcement presence.

Jefferson County Sheriff Mike Hale addressed concerns at a crime prevention meeting Tuesday night. He says a new sheriff's office substation will open to serve the McCalla and Eastern Valley area.

"That's just a wonderful thing," Subway manager Joseph Honeycutt said. "I fell better about my taxpaying dollars going into something like that."

Officials say five deputies were paid overtime in those areas to respond to an increase in crimes. Since then, break-ins dropped from 20 a month to about five.

State Farm insurance agent Shane Lewis has lived and worked in the area for 10 years and is happy to see it growing. But he says he fears the growing crime could hurt the area or worse yet end someone's life. He hopes the promise of a substation is a real one.

"I'm here and look out the window every day," Lewis said. "We'll know when the presence has been heightened so the proof is in the pudding."

Sheriff Hale says he is sure a substation will bring down the crime rate even more and will also allow deputies to answer more calls, since they won't have to make as many trips to Birmingham to drop off suspects.

An opening date and exact location for the substation have not been announced. Hale says his office still has to find a location and hire and train deputies.
