FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

Florence Police are asking anyone with information about a murder victim's gambling activity to contact investigators.

The suspect, Jeremy Williams, told investigators he stabbed the victim, Brioni Rutland, after Rutland tried to cut off one of Williams' fingers in an attempt to collect a gambling debt.

Williams said in his statement that he stabbed Rutland several times at his Hawthorne Street apartment and then shot him. Williams told police he moved Rutland's body to the railroad bridge in Sheffield, attached concrete blocks and threw the body into the Tennessee River.

Florence Police said based on Williams' statement, witness interviews, and physical evidence, Williams has been charged with Rutland's murder.

Investigators are asking that anyone involved in gambling with Rutland to contact the Florence Police Department at 256-760-6573.

"What we're asking the public to do is if you have been involved in gambling, whether it was a poker game or if you were betting on a sports event with Mr. Rutland, we need to talk to you because you can give us information," said Mike Holt with the police department.

Police believe this information will help investigators determine the whereabouts and events that led up to Rutland's death.
