MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

‘Tis the season for holiday shopping – and for thieves to take advantage. But crooks aren't just going for what's under your tree; police said now is prime-time for identity theft, which means you have to be more cautious.

Madison Police Captain John Stringer said there are several things you can do to secure your personal information.

You must make sure where you shop is secure, especially when shopping online. Most secure websites offer several links to their privacy policies. You can also check for their security certificate – all secure sites will have one.

Capt. Stringer said it's even more important to monitor your credit card statements daily and look for strange charges. That way, if you become a victim of fraudulent charges this holiday season, you can be reimbursed quicker and police can get a head start on tracking down the person responsible.

Even if you do everything right, Capt. Stringer said it is impossible to be 100% protected. In fact, even police officers are vulnerable.

"I've personally been a victim of identity theft, and I was fortunate enough not to be out any money. I caught it very quickly. Looking at my bank account, I noticed someone had made fraudulent debits on my checking account; things I hadn't ordered," he explained.
