ILLINOIS (KFVS) -

A Salvation Army bell ringer is collecting money, but he isn't ringing a bell.

Darold Dunning volunteers for the Salvation Army because he said he likes to help people.

Dunning said he loves to sing, so he sings Christmas carols instead of ringing the bell to collect money.

"It seems like when I'm singing, it seems like everybody would give me a better donation for the Salvation Army, and not only that it brightens their days up because they go to smiling," Dunning said.

Dunning lives in Southern Illinois and sings for his church.

He said he also dresses up as Santa Clause at some local Heartland events.
