BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Alabama Power is sending crews to north Texas ahead of a major winter storm.

According to a statement on the company's website, about 100 Alabama Power line crew and employees, along with 60 of their contractors, will head to a staging area in Dallas, TX. They are leaving Thursday morning.

The utility company says non-line employees will help with various support functions.

Alabama Power says this deployment shouldn't have any impact on their ability to handle any weather-related issues in their own territory.

The winter storm is expected to bring significant ice and snow from New Mexico, through north Texas and all the way into the Ohio Valley. Behind the storm, bitter cold temperatures for a large chunk of the United States.

The FOX6 Stormwarn team is tracking the storm which is expected to bring rain, some thunder and then much colder temperatures to Alabama. Keep up with the latest forecast at www.myfoxal.com/weather, and on the FOX6 Weather app. Get more information on our apps here: www.myfoxal.com/apps.
