GADSDEN, AL (WBRC) -

The high school coach of a college quarterback accused of sexual assault is speaking out Thursday.

Prosecutors says that Florida State University quarterback Jameis Winston will not be charged with sexual assault. A 19-year-old woman claims Winston raped her a year ago but Winston says the sex was consensual.

Matt Scott coached Winston while he played at Hueytown High School. Scott, who is now the Gadsden City High School head coach, says he never doubted Winston's innocence.

The allegations of sexual assault were made to police a year ago. The accuser says she and a group of friends had drinks at a bar and then she only remembers being in a car with a black man, being taken to an apartment and raped.

Scott says he's wanted to speak out on Winston's behalf but waited until the prosecutor's investigation was complete. Scott says he and Winston text each other several times a week and he's watched his former player in action for FSU.

Scott says he often gave Winston words of encouragement.

"I can only imagine how difficult a time it was for him, you know, just as I say many times, people are in awe of what he does on the field, which most of the time does not surprise me, his calm, cool nature out there. But when you throw something like this in there, it's, you know, it's a whole other event," Scott said.

The accuser's family released a statement saying they appreciated the Florida State Attorney's investigation. They have been critical of the Tallahassee Police Department's response.
