TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) -

The University of Alabama student newspaper issued an apology Thursday after an editorial cartoon stirred controversy.

The cartoon depicts an Alabama player unable to stop an Auburn player in the Iron Bowl. But it's the caption, "This Is What Happens in Obama's America," that has some people riled up.

Once the paper hit newstands, some readers were shocked to see it. Others say it's meant to be satire, but they can see where people may think differently.

"Obviously the joke is that Obama can be blamed for things that have nothing to do with him," Sho Asa, a student said. "It supposed to be a joke but it can kinda be taken too far."

"It's supposed to be a joke, but its kinda dumb. Thats just my opinion," Patrick Gordon, another UA student told FOX6.

But once the picture hit websites like Twitter, some didn't find it too funny. One person said the cartoon "was literally the dumbest thing I've seen from them. Why print that? It reflects poorly on all of us."

Several people on Twitter called the cartoon racist. One person even went as far to say the editor of The Crimson White should be fired. Others saw it as just a political joke.

Thursday afternoon, with mounting complaints, The Crimson White's editor released a lengthly apoology letter saying the picture is satire and only meant to be that.

Mazie Bryant, The Crimson White's Editor-in-Chief wrote: "This cartoon was by no means intended to be racist or insulting. It was the unfortunate product of editoral oversight and a lack of a critical eye in determining possible implications the cartoon could have. This mistkae will not be made again."

Bryant adds that it was meant to be a comment on "the more absurd explanations given for Alabama's collapse," at the end of the Iron Bowl.

Bryant wrote more people will be involved in the decision making process when it comes to choose future editorial cartoons.
