MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Alabama State University is continuing with its introduction of three finalists who want to be the university's next president.

Friday the three candidates, State Sen. Quinton Ross, Dr. Gwendolyn Boyd and Brig. Gen. Samuel Nichols, started their interviews with the 15-member search committee.

The interviews come the day after students and faculty got the chance to meet the candidates.

WSFA 12 News was there as State Sen. Quinton Ross, Dr. Gwendolyn Boyd and Brig. Gen. Samuel Nichols met students Thursday night. Dozens applied for the position, but these were the three remaining in the process.

Each candidate spoke of the school's potential. All three were optimistic about handling the audit recently released on the school's finances.

"The first point of business is going to be to restore the integrity, to restore the public trust, to restore the trust of the students, to restore the trust of the faculty staff, and even the community at large," said Ross.

"Once all of these things have settled, you know, permanent leadership will allow this to be a blip on the radar for this university. It will be taken care of by the appropriate people who need to take care of it, and then we will go on to high heights and do great things at Alabama State," Boyd added.

Nichols said he welcomes the opportunity to work with the people of ASU.

For months, the university kept a tight lid on the candidates, only revealing the names when the final four were announced. Dr. Jorge Haddock withdrew his consideration last month.

A decision is expected sometime in January.
