MADISON COUNTY (WAFF) -

Senator Shadrack McGill will not seek re-election according to the Legislative Delegation office.

McGill ousted Lowell Barron for the 8th District seat in 2010. Barron held the office for 28 years. The 8th District covers DeKalb, Jackson and Madison Counties.

McGill gained attention for stating raising teacher salaries goes against a Biblical principal. His wife became news when she took to Facebook to tell women to stop sending pictures to her husband.

In a statement released Friday, McGill said in part, "To serve diligently in the Legislature, or any public servant position for that matter, puts a strain on families that many folks may not realize. I do not feel that I am done with politics by no means, but I do feel that a much needed break is in order for my family."

McGill will finish his current term. "I plan on finishing my term strong, and I look forward to having a productive 2014 Session," he said in his statement. You can read his statement in full here. (PDF)

Three people announced plans to run for the seat before McGill bowed out. State Representative Todd Greeson of Ider and Fort Payne businessman Steve Livingston are running as Republicans. Former Jackson County Commissioner Horace Clemmons is running as a Democrat.
