BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Neither rain, nor slow, nor sleet, nor hail shall keep Santa Claus from his appointed rounds. He proved that Friday when he arrived at Children's of Alabama in Birmingham with a trailer full of gifts for the second annual Operation Toy Drop.

But he wasn't accompanied by reindeer, but representatives of 14 law enforcement agencies from across the state instead.

The law enforcement officers typically arrive at the hospital by helicopter but the rain grounded them this year. Thankfully, they were still able to deliver hundreds of toys and games.

Those gifts will stock the Sugar Plum Shop, a special holiday store on the Children's of Alabama campus. The shop is a convenient way for parents to "shop" for their little ones and siblings for free.

"What a great event," beamed Hoover Police Chief Nick Derzis. "This time of year with all the tragedies and things that occur, it puts a smile on a child's face, especially a child at Children's, I don't think we could do any better."

And Santa got there just in time for seven-year-old Gracie Poole to see him.

"I think it's very exciting to her," said her mother, Jennifer Poole, said. "She's had a major surgery and has been down and this was good for her. It's the most excited she's been in three days."

Morgan County Sheriff Ana W. Franklin says she hopes the children feel the love from around the state.

"People do care and want them to be happy and hate they can't be home. But the next best thing is to bring a little joy and pray that next year they're not here," she said.

Children's of Alabama says that state troopers and law enforcement from Coffee, Morgan, Limestone, Marshall, Dale, Houston, Jefferson, Russell, Etowah, Chilton, Tuscaloosa, and Cullman counties participated in the donation.
