WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Wilmington Police and the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office are investigating a homicide after a 20-year-old man was found with multiple gun shot wounds. Police responded to a call of shots fired around 12:30 a.m., that's when they found Drayshawn Dowd.

Originally police said Dowd was found dead, but later they said he was taken to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he died early Saturday morning from his injuries.

Officials say there was a party going on in the 4400 block of McClelland Dr. when an altercation happened. They say Dowd left the party, then returned and was shot. The crime scene stretched the length of the 4400 block of McClelland Drive, and it was blocked off to residents when crews arrived on scene.

Dowd had a gunshot wound to the chest and possibly one to the back of the head.

Witnesses in the area say it sounded like a shoot out. They say there were at least two series of gunshots consisting of around 6 shots each. They say it sounded like the first series of shots sounded stationary, while the second series sounded as if they were moving.

At this time police are looking for the suspect in the shooting.
