DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

A water main break left a big mess at a school in Decatur Monday.

Brookhaven Middle School flooded because of the break. Classes were cancelled and students sent home.

Maintenance crews began draining 18 inches of water out of the building, a process that was estimated to take several hours. Once drained, crews must determine where the break originated so they can repair it.

Teachers came in to find parts of the school building flooded Monday morning. Water was running out from underneath the doors and the locker rooms were flooded. The basement was also under water.

School officials believe the break happened sometime on Sunday. There is no heat or plumbing operating in the building as work to drain the water and repair the leak continues.

"When you have shifts in the soil caused by temperature changes when its really hot, and we had some warm weather last week, and now it's really cold, it causes shifts in the ground and the lines sometimes can't handle the pressure and it will snap it off," explained maintenance supervisor Bruce Friday.

School officials said Monday evening the leak was repaired and that classes would resume Tuesday.
