HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Candace Burgess of Arab, has been booked into the Metro Jail for first-degree hindering prosecution in connection with the weekend murder of Amy Murphy.

Madison County Sergeant Brian Chaffin said Burgess contacted the sheriff's department while they were investigating the whereabouts of the suspect, Scott Carter. According to the Madison County Sheriff's Department, Burgess contacted investigators and reported her vehicle stolen.

Sgt. Chaffin said upon further investigation, the vehicle was not stolen and Burgess helped Carter flee the area with it. Investigators said the two were friends.

"She reported it stolen trying to cover all her bases," said Sgt. Chaffin.

The Madison County Sheriff's Department put out a bolo (be on the lookout) for the vehicle to nearby states and Arkansas authorities spotted it in Clarksville Sunday night.

Investigators said another woman, Misty Burgess, 36, of Hartselle, was driving the vehicle. They said she surrendered to law enforcement. That's when they said Scott Carter climbed into the driver's seat and a short pursuit ensued.

The sheriff's department said Arkansas authorities used spike strips to slow and stop the vehicle. When it came to a rest, they found Scott Carter with a fatal self inflicted gunshot wound. Neither Arkansas and Alabama authorities are holding Misty Burgess for any crimes.

"Misty Burgess was a friend of Carter's from years past," said Chaffin. "She was not aware of what kind of crime Scott Carter had committed."

Madison County Sheriff's Department investigators believe Carter was heading to Oklahoma where he had ties. According to authorities, Candace Burgess and Misty Burgess are not related and it's a coincidence they share the same last name.

On Saturday, Carter was accused of shooting and killing Amy Murphy at a home on the 1400 block of Jordan Road in Madison County.

The Madison County Sheriff's Department said Candace Burgess was taken into custody in Arab. Court documents show Candace was still on probation for previous charges of possession of drug paraphernalia in Morgan County.
