Let's say someone asks if you have change for a $20 bill, you give them change and go on your way.

However, as you try to use that $20 to buy gas, the police show up and inform you just used counterfeit money.

News Leader 9's Brittany Dionne spoke with local authorities who say this could very well happen to you.

Just this year, more than 200 cases of counterfeit money have been reported in the Chattahoochee Valley.

The "funny money" usually come in $10 or $20 bills and is passed off in small increments according to officials.

The latest case out of Phenix City ended with three people arrested.

This trio of counterfeiters allegedly used fake money at numerous fast food restaurants and even retail giant Wal-Mart. The group is facing felony charges.

Phenix City police say new technology makes counterfeiting easier.

"Better printers out there and computers it gets to be a challenge," said Captain Frank Ivey with the Phenix City Police Department. "Then again, they are constantly changing the money which makes it even more difficult to counterfeit it."

Officials say crimes like this also hurt your pocket. When retailers lose money, they pass the cost on to you.
