BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Longtime Tuscaloosa County Chief Deputy Ron Abernathy is scheduled to announce his candidacy for Tuscaloosa County Sheriff on Tuesday. The announcement is set for 2 p.m. on the steps of the Tuscaloosa County Courthouse.

Abernathy has been with the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office for 25 years. He has served as Chief Deputy since 1999. This role makes him the highest ranking deputy in the department. Abernathy was acting sheriff from 2008 to 2009, while former Sheriff Ted Sexton was serving in Washington, D.C., with the Department of Homeland Security. Abernathy is the first candidate to announce his plans to run for Sheriff.

Sheriff Ted Sexton left the office in early 2013 to join the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Governor Robert Bentley appointed longtime law enforcement officer Billy Sharp to serve the remainder of Sexton's term. Tuscaloosa County voters will choose a new sheriff next year.
