FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) -

Military families lined up by the hundreds for Trees for Troops, held Thursday Dec. 12 at Wetherby Field on Fort Benning.

Active duty soldiers at Fort Benning recieved Christmas trees donated by people and businesses all over the country.

More than 800 trees were donated by tree farmers, retailers, and people nationwide. Some families, like the Garcias who had been there since 3 a.m., lined up hoping to be the first in line.

"We're pretty cold but we're getting warm," said Alexis and Ray Garcia. "We do see a lot of people, a lot of soldiers out here, a lot of families out here. And, it's a warm feeling especially when Fed-ex comes out here with all these trucks and giving all these trees we're like, awesome."

The gates opened at 10:30 a.m. and the trees were given out on a first come, first serve basis. Soldiers could be seen tossing trees over their shoulders in every direction. Those who donated even attached personal notes for the soldiers and their families.

"It means a lot. It saves a lot of money, especially because people think the military has this criteria that we're rich and we're really not. And the size of those trees has been really awesome the last couple of years."

Since the program began, FedEx trucks have driven more than 400,000 miles for Trees for Troops - delivering more than 120,000 trees to U.S. military bases and to units worldwide.

The event is sponsored by SPIRIT Foundation and FedEx Corp.
