PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Police are asking for your help in figuring out what led to a horse being shot in the head in a desert area southeast of Wittmann.

Detectives from Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's Animal Crimes Investigation Unit responded to the shooting late Saturday night in the area of 243rd Avenue and Patton Road.

MCSO said the horse is believed to be in its late 20s to early 30s. Despite the injury, the horse was alert and sifting the ground for food. The horse is in serious condition.

Detectives said they have no leads at this time. If you have information, call the MCSO Animal Crimes Hotline at 602-876-1681.
