Montgomery chamber lays out goals for 2014

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Community and business leaders want to continue Montgomery's strides in economic development, education and tourism in 2014.

Officials with the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce say the city made great progress in 2013 on many different fronts and they want to keep the momentum going.

The chamber held its 141st annual meeting Tuesday night at the Montgomery Performing Arts Centre bringing out nearly 1,000 members of the business community as officials recognized the city's milestones this year. Among those milestones was the more the $230 million in capital investments by existing area industries and the creation of nearly 300 jobs.

As chamber chairman Horace Horn with Powersouth Energy Cooperative passed the reigns to Leslie Sanders with Alabama Power both touted the city's ongoing transformation and those working to make it happen.

"We've had a very successful year, a very good year. We've been involved in a lot of different campaigns with the chamber -- economic development, our fundraising efforts through our investor program, the Total Resource Campaign Program," Horn said. "As for 2014, we'll get started with the fundraising efforts that we'll have around the community. We will examine and re-examine our economic development efforts that we're involved in, our travel and tourism that the chamber handles for the Montgomery area. We're keeping everything going in a great, positive direction as the community is going."

"Montgomery is standing at a juncture that is incredibly exciting. There is activity downtown. There is activity in every part of the city. There's also wonderful opportunities in education and Montgomery Technical Educational Center and looking at how they can contribute to the new businesses here as far as giving them a skill set with which to get wonderful jobs," Sanders said.

The chamber's Total Resource Campaign, which funds their programs, events, publications, electronic media and aids in recruiting members raised more than a $1 million in 2013 -- part of what officials say is a "shared vision to build a greater Montgomery."
