CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -
A single mom and her three children are continuing to suffer after a traumatic attack at their home in Chesterfield, which cost them nearly everything.
LaTonia Ampey's ex-boyfriend, William Jones, is in custody. Jones is accused of throwing a fire bomb into Ampey's home on Ravensbourne Drive, the day before Thanksgiving. The home went ablaze while the kids were still inside. The children escaped, but the family is still trying to gain stability and basic necessities.
Ampey agreed to meet us at the burned home, she once hoped to buy. However, her sister, Shameta Ampey, says she had a last-minute panic attack.
"She couldn't cope with coming to (a place) so soon where she lost everything at," said Shameta Ampey.
Shameta Ampey says LaTonia and her children are in counseling, after the kids were forced to run out of a house going up in flames.
"Still in shock…nightmares about what they endured," described Shameta Ampey.
William Jones is accused of throwing a fire bomb through the back door.
"We heard a big noise, a big boom," described Massenburg.
Massenburg says they watched Jones continue to throw gasoline on the house.
"Still putting the gas and watching us run up the street," recalled Massenburg of the intense moments.
The family says Jones spray painted cars belonging to LaTonia's coworkers days before the incident. They say he also called LaTonia, threatening to set fire to the house.
Shameta Ampey says her sister didn't believe the unthinkable would actually happen. Now, the family is scrambling to replace what they've lost.
"We need our shoes, and clothes, and to find us a house," said Massenburg.
LaTonia Ampey filed for a restraining order against William Jones after the incident. However, her family tells me tonight, that it hasn't made them feel much safer.
"She's coping… some days good, some days not," said Shameta Ampey.
