More than 100 dogs and a few exotic birds were saved from a puppy mill in Colbert County.
Investigators got a tip about a large puppy mill at a home off Highway 72. Workers and deputies started rounding up the animals around 3 p.m. Tuesday and didn't finish until 11 p.m.
Workers rescued 122 dogs from the home, mostly Yorkies and Pomeranians. All of the animals are in good shape.
The Colbert County Animal shelter is currently unable to take in any new animals due to Tuesday night's rescue. Officials said that due to the cold temperatures, someone had to do something.
"Just because they have fur doesn't mean they're going to stay warm. They need a place to get out of the cold," said Judie Nichols with the shelter.
The Colbert County Sheriff's Department continues to investigate. So far no charges have been filed.
