SCOTTSBORO, AL (WAFF) -

The Jackson County legislative delegation is considering a pricey move across the street to the Scottsboro City Hall. More than $125,000 has already been spent on the purchase and renovation of a building on the Scottsboro City Square.

Senator Shadrack McGill said the county has expressed interest in the building and they are willing to give it to them. No one knows how much it would cost to renovate the building, and it has not been approved by the county commission, so it is not a done deal.

Scottsboro Mayor Melton Potter said he received an inquiry from the delegation a couple of months ago about leasing a portion of the unfinished space on the City Hall's third floor. Under this plan, Potter said the renovation cost estimate is around $165,000, which would be paid by the delegation, and the city would pay $25,000 for a shared conference room. The delegation would then pay $1 per year for 15 years.

However, the delegation purchased a building last year on the square, replaced the roof, and gutted it, which is the state it remains in today.

Meanwhile, the city council has approved their portion of the deal.

"They wanted approval from our city council before making a decision to say we are going to do that, so back in November, the city council voted to allow them to move over here if that was their wishes," said Potter.

Before the delegation can move forward, a board will have to approve it, but some board members express concerns.

A meeting is set for Monday to consider authorizing the architectural plans.
