MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

A North Alabama prosecutor will play a key role in the prosecution of September 11 terror suspects.

Marshall County District Attorney Steve Marshall will be in the courtroom with five big-name suspects next week. One of them, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, is considered the mastermind behind the attack.

Marshall will fly to Cuba this weekend to be in court next week as part of a 14-person group to evaluate the motions hearing. Civil liberties groups will also have representatives on hand to witness the proceedings. Marshall said this is to help provide transparency in that the rule of law is being followed.

Marshall was selected as the lone prosecutor by the National District Attorneys Association and will spend the entirety of next week in Guantanamo Bay.

Victims of the attack will also be there, and Marshall expects his role will require interaction with them; "reaffirmation to them that everything being done according to what the law requires and also the expectation that they will eventually find justice in this case," he said.

Marshall said Mohammed is expected to be tried sometime next year. For more on the motions hearing, visit this website.
