(WMC-TV) - Construction could cause huge traffic delays in the city of Memphis this weekend and early next week.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation will close ramp 12-C from Interstate 40 eastbound from Covington Pike on Sunday from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. There will be partial closures on Monday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The construction is related to the I-40/240 interchange improvement. It is a $100 million construction project.

"The I-40 corridor is one of the four largest commercial traveled roads in the nation. So there's a lot of need in that interchange," said TDOT Commissioner John Schroer.

As a result TDOT says you can expect significant delays along I-40 east between Covington Pike and the 40/240 interchange as well as I-240 east and west between the 40/240 interchange. Also, expect delays at the Poplar and Walnut Grove exits.

The recommended alternate route for through traffic is the I-240 South loop to the newly-finished Bill Morris Parkway'Highway 385, which will get you back to I-40 in Arlington.
