DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

Patrons and employees of a popular seafood restaurant were shocked to find the Decatur location suddenly closed up shop Friday.

A spokesperson for Wintzell's Oyster House said that the decision to close the Decatur branch was made "in the last two days."

The spokesperson said employees have been made aware of opportunities at other locations.

A notice posted on the Decatur location's website cited market conditions and "extended road construction resulting in a general lack of business" leading to the owner's decision to shut down.

On their official Facebook page, the restaurant responded to unhappy messages from customers with this statement:

This is tough for all of us. We wish we didn't have to close the Decatur location as we have enjoyed being a part of this community and getting to know so many wonderful people. It's the last thing we want to do, especially at this time of year. Unfortunately, tough business decisions have to be made.

Employees were told they will receive a final paycheck on the next scheduled pay period. However, workers said they thought they had 60 days to find new jobs and they feel lied to.

"Thankfully, I have a husband that works. But there are some people here who are single moms who may not be able to have their kids' Christmas now, because we've closed two weeks before Christmas," said former employee Christina Tucker.

Officials with Wintzell's corporate office said customers who bought Groupon deals for the Decatur location should contact Groupon for details about refunds. Gift cards issued by Wintzell's will be honored at all locations.
