Elmore Co. teacher dies following weekend crash

ELMORE COUNTY, AL (WSFA) -

An Elmore County teacher who was involved in a traffic crash with an 18-wheeler has died of injuries she sustained in the crash last Friday.

Marilyn Nipper, 61, was a special education collaboration teacher at Elmore County High School.

Authorities say Nipper collided with a log truck Friday and was rushed to an area hospital in serious condition. She remained in the hospital's intensive care unit until she passed away Monday afternoon.

"It's been very upsetting for the entire Elmore County school system, and they have Mrs. Nippers and her family in their thoughts and prayers," Elmore County Schools Superintendent Dr. Jeff Langham said Monday before it was confirmed that she had died.

System spokeswoman Judy Caton said that Tuesday, ECHS Principal Wes Rogers visited each classroom to talk with students about Mrs. Nipper. Caton said counselors are being made available to any student in need.

A substitute teacher will be in place to cover Ms. Nipper's class until further notice.

Caton said because of semester exams, the school schedule is not normal and only about half of the school's students were in attendance Tuesday due to exemptions. She said the campus "was quiet and there was definitely an air of sadness."

Mrs. Nipper is being remembers as "a humorous and very spontaneous individual," Caton said, "so there is some laughter as people recall things she would say and do."

"She loved her students and will be greatly missed," Caton said.

No funeral arrangements were immediately available.
