(WMC-TV) - Red-light cameras busted 8,00 drivers at the corner of Germantown Parkway and Highway 64 this year, which is more than any of the other intersections with red-light cameras.

And more are coming soon to the Mid-South. The company that supplies them says the cameras do the job.

A montage released Monday shows some of the most egregious and dangerous red-light running cases in Memphis so far in 2013.

"I think the videos are a way to remind people that cameras are there to help reduce a driving activity that can be very, very dangerous," said Charles Territo with American Traffic Solutions

ATS will provide 30 additional red-light cameras plus 15 speed cameras in school zones next year.

Thus far in 2013 ATS says its cameras have captured about 107,000 violations, but only 60,000 citations have been issued after the reviewing Memphis Police Department officer threw out nearly 47,000.

ATS says 92 percent of people busted by a red-light camera have not been caught a second time. Red-light cameras have been used to assist in 24 other criminal investigations including three homicides.

Ever since the first cameras were installed during Councilman Myron Lowery's interim term many have described the cameras as a cash grab.

But like the city, ATS says the electronic eye watching overhead is all about safety.

"We think it's important that people remember just how important it is to stop on red," said Territo. "When people don't stop on red, the results can be very, very tragic."

The day of the week with the most red-light runs is Friday. The time of day with the most red-light runs is between 3 and 4 p.m.

Installation on those 45 new cameras begins early 2014.
