HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A local developer wants to build a new shopping development in South Huntsville.

Developer Raymond Jones Jr. asked the city Tuesday to re-zone the north side of Carl T. Jones Drive at Ledges Drive. He wants to change it from a residential and neighborhood business district to a commercial district.

The Jones family wants to build a new high-end shopping center on about 126 acres of land. Jones said this is the first step in the process.

"There is a vast need for more commercial area. If you look across the street, that shopping center that we developed is 100 percent occupied and has been since the day it opened," Jones said.

Gary Smith, President of the Ledges Community Association, said his group does have several concerns about the development, primarily traffic resulting from the increased retail space.

The Huntsville Planning Commission voted in favor of the re-zoning measure at Tuesday night's meeting. The issue will soon go before the Huntsville City Council. A public hearing will also be scheduled before a vote to approve the new zones.
