BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The National Transportation Safety Board will hold a press conference on the Gate City apartment explosion Wednesday at 4 p.m.

FOX6 News will stream the news conference online at www.FoxAlabamaLive.com. You can also view it through the WBRC News app.

The NTSB is leading the investigation into the explosion and fire that killed one person and injured eight in the Gate City public housing complex in east Birmingham early Tuesday morning.

Birmingham city officials said two NTSB officials are already on the ground and at least one more is expected to arrive Thursday. At the most, four NTSB officials could be assigned to the Gate City explosion investigation.

NTSB spokesperson Terry Williams said pipeline incidents are one of the most common investigations the NTSB conducts. They've investigated 122 pipeline incidents since 1996.

The official cause of the Gate City explosion has not yet been determined. Birmingham fire chief Ivor Brooks said yesterday the explosion loosened the connection to the gas meters outside the building, causing natural gas to flow freely and feed the fire for more than two hours.

The explosion, which happened around 2:45 a.m., destroyed two five-bedroom units in the Gate City community.

Tyrennis Laval Mabry, 40, was killed in the blast. Her body was found in the rubble of the apartment building near her fiance, Daryle Brown. He was transported to UAB Hospital and remains in critical condition.

In addition to Brown, seven people, including four children, were hospitalized for their injuries.

Alagasco officials and the NTSB are at the explosion site this morning, continuing their investigation.
