Reported death toll in Rocky Point shootout rises

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Local, state and federal authorities in Puerto Penasco, Sonora are investigating an early morning shooting that left at least five people dead in the Mexican sea-side community.

Witnesses reported seeing military helicopters overhead and machine gun fire near some of the busiest hotels in Rocky Point starting around 5:30 a.m.

An American at one of the high rise resorts along Sandy Beach recorded the sounds of the gunfire in video that was posted on YouTube.

Preliminary reports confirm at least five people were killed in the incident – none of them Americans. All of them were reportedly suspected criminals targeted by Mexican authorities.

It's unclear what started the confrontation, but one vehicle with California license plates burst into flames outside the Bella Serina Resort.

The Mexican military was involved in a shootout with the occupants of that vehicle, at least two of whom were killed.

As the incident was taking place, the U.S. Consul tweeted from Nogales, "Reports of large gun battle on Sandy Beach....UScitz (citizens) advised to shelter until gunfire is over."
