Ole Miss student found dead, foul play suspected

(WMC-TV) - Investigators in Lafayette County are working to learn more about the death of an Ole Miss graduate. They suspect foul play and are investigated Zacharius McClendon's death as a homicide.

Deputies found McClendon, 25, dead around 3 a.m. Wednesday when they showed up to do a welfare check on him.

As of Wednesday afternoon, no one was in custody for the crime.

The sheriff's department is not releasing much information at this time, but Ole Miss confirms McClendon, a Gulfport native, was a first year graduate student studying for an MBA.

The university released the following statement:

The University family is shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Zach McClendon. We feel pain and loss any time one of our students is taken from us. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends and we, as a University family, will do all that we can to support them.

Residents on Levee Street woke up to crime scene tape and state investigators combing through the neighborhood.

"I saw the crime scene unit truck and then maybe an hour later the coroner came," said Barry Hudek, who lives nearby.

Mississippi Bureau of Investigation agents were seen carrying several bagged items from the home.

"We were sitting in the living room right there, so if anything happened that close to the house, we probably would have heard it," said neighbor Keith Davis.
