CENTERVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Almost 13 years after Nashville paramedic Jeffrey Ola was murdered in Hickman County, authorities say they have arrested his suspected killers.

The suspects are the victim's former wife and her son, and the investigation has been a long, hard road for his family.

"This is never going to bring my brother back, but we are finally, as a family, going to have closure," said Gary Ola, a Cheatham County deputy sheriff and brother of the victim.

Lisa Ann Showalter, 53, who was Ola's wife at the time of his murder, and Showalter's son, 32-year-old Andrew Scott Waddell, have each been indicted on one count of first-degree murder.

Waddell is currently serving a 15-year sentence in Mississippi for an armed robbery conviction in 2003.

"My gut feeling was that she always knew more than what she was telling the family. Yes, that was all of our feelings," Gary Ola said.

Jeffrey Ola and his wife were separated at the time of his death in 2001, but they had talked about getting back together.

Jeffrey Ola's mother was the last one to hear her son's voice. He was actually speaking on the phone with her when he went to get something to eat, and then pulled back in his driveway, where he was shot nine times that cold January night.

"And he just started yelling, 'Mother, oh, God, mother, I've been shot,'" Gary Ola said.

Gary Ola said their mother constantly checked with the Hickman County Sheriff's Office and Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to make sure the case didn't go cold.

Jeffrey Ola was a paramedic for years and taught emergency medical technicians. He was also a father and now has grandchildren he will never know.

His family said they know it will be a long process toward justice, but they're celebrating this first step.

"It's going to be a very merry Christmas this year, because every year, we always tend his grave site, and my mom decorates it and everything. And we always promise him the last one breathing will fight for his justice. And, this year, we will be able to tell him it's done," Gary Ola said.

Waddell is scheduled to complete his robbery sentence in Mississippi in 2017, and Tennessee authorities have placed a hold on him to face the murder charge.

Law enforcement received new information about the case in May 2013 and started collecting evidence in multiple states, including Oregon, Iowa, Nebraska, Texas and Mississippi.
