VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

The Lowndes County 4H Club held a luncheon on Wednesday afternoon to thank all of the local businesses that helped them raise money to purchase a new bus.

The bus is replacing the van, which the group had used to transport students for the past 10 years.

Lowndes County 4H Agent Laura Walton said the new bus will allow the club to continue it's activities, but also to incorporate more students in the future.

"It's going to be used for transporting Lowndes County 4Hers so we can pick them up from schools and pick up larger numbers, which would increase our participation overall," Walton said.

The money used to buy the bus was raised over the past five years through fundraising. Each year, the Lowndes County 4H Club held their 'Let Kids Dig It' event. Local companies would bring out their construction equipment and kids would pay a small fee to ride on and play around with the equipment.

Once the club had collected enough money to pay for half of the cost of the bus, the county matched the amount and chipped in the other half of the money.

The students love the bus, in fact they've already used it for several events.

"Oh yeah, they love it," said Jake Price, the Agriculture Agent and Extension Coordinator for Lowndes County. "Its got a nice interior, its got bucket seats. It doesn't look like a regular school bus inside."

Both Price and Walton said they are extremely grateful for the community's support and for the county's willingness to help them out.
