Military families pick up food for holiday meal

HINESVILLE, GA (WTOC) -

Hundreds of grocery and gift bags lined the floor of Connection Church as local military families lined up for them. It was part of a national give away from Operation Homefront.

"Twelve years ago, two military spouses understood, as we sent our troops to war, that there would always be needs the existing military support system couldn't meet," explained executive director Simone Velasquez Hoover.

Sponsors such as Wal Mart, Jim Beam, Chinet and others offered the ingredients for a full holiday meal, as well as paper plates, cups, and everything else. Staff members delivered 300 packages.

"It's nice to see people care and put forth an effort like this. You don't see it as much as we should," noted Spc. Heath Martins as he and wife and two of their three children walked through the line.

Volunteers also helped children draw pictures and decorate cookies and walk them through a photo with Santa.

Operation Homefront assists enlisted soldiers, E1 through E6, with emergency assistance for things like emergency home and vehicle repairs, caregiver assistance and food.

Hoover said 80 percent of Operation Homefront's emergency aid goes to wounded warriors who are in transition and waiting for benefits.
