PRATTVILLE, AL (WSFA) -

The City of Prattville's Wastewater Department is about to being conducting smoke testing in the Overlook area and the testing will last for approximately two weeks.

The smoke is non-toxic and allows crews to see if there is a crack or break in sewer mains.

Officials say that if residents see smoke coming up out of manhole covers, the grass in the yard, the roof vent on houses or out of the toilet or drains in the bathroom, they want to get a phone call from you.

The department's administrative office can be contacted at 334-595-0480.

City officials say residents should only see the smoke inside their home if they have a bathroom that is not regularly used. The p-trap gets dried out and will allow the smoke through to be visibly emitted. They say to prevent this, flush that toilet and run the water in the sink and shower for a minute.

Officials say the testing is normal preventive maintenance.

Residents should have received a letter a few days ago. Anyone with questions can contact Wastewater crews at 334-595-0641.
