WALTHALL COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

Finishing touches are being made to the new Walthal County Jail and it should be ready to be moved into shortly after the first of the year.

The 2.7 million dollar jail was necessary because the old jail which was built in 1963 is inadequate and no longer meets state or county standards. The new facility is state of the art, computer controlled, with video surveillance throughout. It has the capability of holding up to 70 male minimum security inmates.

"We were faced with an option of spending a ton of money to renovate the old jail or to build a new jail with increased capacity," said Sheriff Duane Dillon. "We can now house state inmates of any category, mostly minimum security, as well as house county inmates also."

Despite the new jail, the county will continue their relationship with Marion County and house some inmates in the Walthal-Marion County Detention Center.
