SCA hosting holiday hoops tourney this weekend

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Sherwood Christian Eagles want to get their program out to the city of Albany.

SCA is hosting the first Eagles Christmas Tournament Friday and Saturday.

Lady Eagles head coach LaKeshia Elder says in a city of state powerhouse programs at all levels, they hope this weekend's tournament can showcase SCA.

"Basketball and Sherwood hasn't been pushed to the top level, so it gives me the opportunity to open the door, to invite the public, to bring them out to show them what we have to offer as far as our athletic program," Elder says. "There's a lot of kids over here who love the game of basketball, and really put their heart into it."

Both the Eagles and Lady Eagles are off to surprising starts.

Elder says this tournament will give them a good gauge of where the teams really are heading into the second half of the season.

"Right now we're 7-1, but we're going to have a week off after this. So I got to get a chance to tidy up on things I need to fix before we leave," Elder says. "We'll be going into region play, so right now's the time we're going to have to make it gel, make it work, figure out where we're going, what I need to fix and what I need to look at before we step into January."

The tournament tips off Friday at 1:00 p.m. The championship games will be played Saturday, beginning at 5:00 with the girls' title game. The boys' championship will follow immediately after.

Admission is $7.00.
