WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Wilmington's mounted patrol takes to the city streets every week.

Jeff Shoffner, a mounted patrol officer for the Wilmington Police Department, explained that the position carries a lot of the same responsibilities that other patrol officers have.

"We do the same job as a patrol officer in a car, just on a horse.  There's nothing we can't do that a regular patrol officer wouldn't do."

Shoffner said that mounted officers even have a much better vantage point when fighting crime.

"We can see a whole lot better- six, seven feet off the ground, than you can on foot," explained Shoffner.

The officer said the mounted patrol deals with a number of downtown issues on a daily basis.

"Every day something's different with it- a lot of alcohol violations," said Shoffner.  "That's usually what we deal with."

Ralph Evangelous, Wilmington Police Chief, stated a few weeks ago that downtown crime levels were hitting record low points.

"The downtown is at historic, historic lows for crime right now," explained Evangelous.  "We have never seen levels this low."

Shoffner said his unit has worked with other law enforcement officials to keep these levels low.

"Good teamwork operation.  Everybody works hard.  Everybody's motivated.  Just doing what we can, so it's really turned around a whole lot for the better," said Shoffner.
