Clean up continues after UMC fire

Posted: Updated:

Clean-up continued on Friday at the University Medical Center following the fire Thursday afternoon.

Hospital officials say the fire began in the hospital's endoscopy lab due to construction. The lab was evacuated as well as the Southwest Cancer Center, the surgery center and emergency room due to smoke filtering through those areas.

The director of the endoscopy center said she was in her office when flames came shooting out of her ceiling. There's still residue left behind from the fire extinguisher she used, among the charred debris scattered on the floor.

The hospital treated 12 people after the fire. 11 construction workers and medical staff suffered from smoke inhalation and one construction worker suffered burns to his hands and arms.

Eric Finley with UMC said that now, the hospital is working to perfect its emergency plan in case something like this happens again.

"We're going to start looking at that in the next couple of weeks," he said. "I'm sure there is going to be some meetings and things talked about. Some of the internal things like internal communication, we will take a look at that and learn from that and move on for next time."

The hospital has moved the endoscopy lab to a different part of the hospital.
