Family, friends celebrate teen killed by alleged drunk driver

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) – A 13-year-old boy killed by a man accused of drunk driving was remembered Friday evening. The level of compassion for Keyon Moss was evident as his church family and friends came together to remember him.

As the Citadel of Deliverance church family gathered to begin the process of saying final goodbyes to Hezekiah Keyon Moss, Youth Pastor Cory Phillips said he has yet to grasp what happened to one of the brightest kids in their youth ministry.

He said, "Knowing that I won't see him on Tuesday nights in teen Bible study and run up to me and say ‘Hey Pastor Corey, how are you doing?'"

Pastor Phillips said Keyon, as he's affectionately known, was a comedian.

"I mean you can have the worst day ever, he'll be sure to say something to you to make you laugh," Phillips said.

Soni Blake never met Keyon in life, but she was there on the scene the night of the tragic crash that claimed his life.

She was behind the wheel; several cars behind the wreck.

Blake said, "I was gonna keep going but my heart just wouldn't let me keep past it. So as I was passing I heard someone hollering from the car saying please help, somebody help me."

She parked, prayed and asked God to allow them to be okay, but she knew this was serious. Keyon and his family needed help.

Blake said even though she didn't know Keyon or his family she said she had to come to Friday night's service.

"I get here and I'm seeing pictures of his mom. I know his mom. I went to school with his mom," she said."

Blake went on to say, "It's like his family is my family and it's hurtful."

Pastor Phillips said he's praying for the emptiness in everyone's heart to be filled.

He said it's "never too young to be happy and just be that person like Keyon was."

Keyon's cousin Sierra is still in the intensive care unit at the MED. The driver of their car is recovering from surgery.

A celebration of life funeral service will be held Saturday at noon at Greater Community Temple. Action News 5's Justin Hanson will be there for the service.
