Woman on phone: 'I have to go, I'm getting arrested for DUI again'

Karen Francis Williams, 52, of Cottonwood Karen Francis Williams, 52, of Cottonwood
COTTONWOOD, AZ (CBS5) -

A woman arrested for drunken driving had reportedly finished a six-pack before heading to pick her daughter up, police said.

An officer found the woman's car parked on the sidewalk in front of 357 South Sixth St. in Cottonwood about 9 p.m. on Dec. 19.

Police said after the officer knocked on the car window several times, the driver, later identified as Karen Francis Williams, rolled down the window but stayed on her phone.

Police said the 52-year-old woman from Cottonwood had an open beer can in her lap.

The officer reportedly asked her to get off her phone but she continued talking on her phone, telling the person on the other end, "I have to go, I'm getting arrested for DUI again."

But she still refused to end the call and the officer removed the phone from her hand.

When the officer asked why she had parked on the sidewalk, Williams said she was going to pick her daughter up from youth group but her daughter was running late so Williams went to Walgreens and then pulled over to talk on the phone, according to Cottonwood police.

The officer reported the woman having blood-shot eyes, slurred speech, and smelling of alcohol.

When asked if she'd been drinking, Williams said she had six beers before she left to get her daughter.

According to Cottonwood police, she told the officer if he was going to arrest her to just do it because she needed to go home. When the officer asked if she would do a sobriety test, she said she "did not feel like it."

The officer learned Williams' license had been revoked and she was arrested and taken to Cottonwood Police Department.

As she got out of the police car, the officer noticed pills, later identified as acetaminophen and hydrocodone in her possession.

Williams screamed and tried to get out of her handcuffs so the officer took her to the Yavapai County Jail so she could be restrained.

She faces charges of aggravated DUI and having an open container.
