FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

Dozens of volunteers in the Shoals spent their Christmas Eve giving back to those in need.

The First United Methodist Church in Florence served more than 2,500 Christmas Eve meals Tuesday. Volunteers spent all week preparing the meals that were either hand-delivered or picked up Tuesday morning.

Organizers said this service provides more than just food to the community.

"There have been relationships developed between some of our congregation when they deliver these meals. They will go back during the year because maybe the older person is lonely, maybe they need some help," said Wannell Scott.

"One lady went back because the [elderly] lady has had a stroke; she would clean her house. So many other parts of the ministry have come about because of the food," Scott continued.

The church also served more than 2,500 Thanksgiving meals just a few weeks ago.
