Investigators release photo of 'person of interest' in cop killing

(WMC-TV) - At least four states are now involved in the search for the suspect who murdered a Tupelo, Miss., police officer and injured a second one.

Investigators are asking for tips in Arkansas, Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi.

Photos of someone described as a "person of interest" have been released to the public. Investigators say the pictures were taken at the Sprint Mart on South Gloster Street 20 minutes before the holdup of the BancorpSouth at Gloster Creek Village.

"Without a doubt in this type of investigation, it's going to depend on the public to help," said Daniel McMullen, FBI.

"This is where we get our strength," said Tupelo Police Chief Bart Aguirre. "We are forged together in this community, with one another."

Officer Gale Stauffer died Monday night. The second officer who was shot, Joseph Maher, is making progress, according to Chief Aguirre.

"He's not out of the woods yet but the doctors are very hopeful that he will survive," he said.

Billboards containing pictures of the suspect and vehicle will go up in Mississippi, Arkansas, and Alabama, but investigators are not limiting their search to those states.

In Tupelo, tributes to the officers can be seen all over town. The chief says both families are overwhelmed with donations.

An account for the families of both officers have been set up at BancorpSouth. The bank will match donations up to $10,000. There will be a candlelight vigil on Christmas for the officers' families.

If you recognize the person in the photos released, you are asked to call Crime Stoppers of Northeast Mississippi at 1-800-773-TIPS. A reward of up to $150,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest.
