HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

For dozens in Huntsville, Christmas Day was about helping those less fortunate. Hundreds of people left the Downtown Rescue Mission Wednesday with full bellies because of the generosity of others.

Everyone from parents and grandparents to young children filled plates of food and handed them out to those in need. All of the food was donated from the community and prepared by the volunteers.

Diners gathered around lunchroom-style tables to partake in the feast, including moms and their children. Some of the folks are overnight guests of the mission; others are residents in rehabilitation programs.

Macaroni and corn are two favorites of Dalton Boone, a young boy thankful for every bite and for the roof over his head at the shelter, even if that roof is shared by many others.

Dozens of volunteers, from the band to those washing dishes, help make the Christmas meal possible.

While a simple plate of food may not seem like a big deal to some, organizer Gregory Howard Davis said it can make all the difference.

"We had one of our guys this morning – he's been here, he graduated early. Now he left to go back to college, back to Portland, Oregon and get his education. We have a happy ending. It helps out. Just one meal can change a man's life or a woman's life," Davis said.

It's that hope for a positive ending that makes it possible for Dalton to leave the table full, happy, and able to dream big.

"I wouldn't want to be out in the freezing cold. If I was a President, I'd make it to where everyone has a home... and you wouldn't have to pay so many bills. It wouldn't be so high. They would be like $2. That way everyone could have a home."
