Jeff's Journal - 10/14/04

I've fallen. And I can't get up.

Another week. Another losing record in the SEC.

Just in time for report cards, I'm getting a "C" in the SEC (72%) and a "D" overall (69%).

But the beautiful thing about football is this: you get a fresh start every week. A clean slate. A do-over. So perhaps this will be the week the Journal returns to form.

Middle Tennessee (2-3) at Florida (3-2) - Ron Zook apologized this week for yelling at some fraternity brothers after a few of his Gator offensive linemen got roughed up in a brawl. No wonder the Gators aren't winning. Their offensive line is getting pushed around by a bunch of frat guys. Florida 31, Middle Tennessee 14

Vanderbilt (1-4) at Georgia (4-1) - Three of Vandy's losses have been by 3 points each. This one will be by 33. Georgia 42, Vanderbilt 9

South Carolina (4-2) at Kentucky (1-4) - Just when the Gamecocks cracked the Top 25, they lost their Homecoming game to Ole Miss. No worries this week against the Mildcats. South Carolina 31, Kentucky 21

Tennessee (4-1) at Ole Miss (3-3) - Both teams are coming off big road wins. The Vols won at Georgia. The Rebels won in Columbia. The Volunteers are in the driver's seat in the SEC East. They need to beat Ole Miss to stay there. Tennessee 34, Ole Miss 28

Southern Miss (4-0) at Alabama (4-2) - The Golden Eagles are unbeaten and ranked in the Top 25. But somehow the Tide is still favored by a touchdown. I think it will be closer than that, but even without Brodie and Ray, Bama still has just enough options to make it work. Alabama 17, Southern Miss 14

Arkansas (3-2) at Auburn (6-0) - How well will the Tigers handle their sudden fame? The Razorbacks are capable of piling on the points. But Gene Chizik's defense takes pride in keeping opponents to single digits on the scoreboard. If the Tigers can shut down Matt Jones, they can shut down anyone. Auburn 31, Arkansas 17

Alabama State (4-1) at Prairie View (2-3) - No sweat for Bama State this week. With an open date looming, the Hornets look forward to a few days off after taming the Panthers. Alabama State 42, Prairie View 21

Troy (3-2) at Arkansas State (1-5) - The Trojans still have a chance to go to the New Orleans Bowl, but Troy will have to be perfect the rest of the way in the Sun Belt Conference. Troy 27, Arkansas State 17

Tuskegee at Fort Valley - The Golden Tigers are back in business after losing on the last play two weeks ago. Tuskegee 38, Fort Valley 28

Huntingdon at Colorado College - Congratulations to Mike Turk and the Hawks on their first ever victory last week. Coaches will tell you winning is a habit. The more you win, the more you expect to win. I know Colorado College has a great hockey team, but their football team is a mystery. Huntingdon 33, Colorado College 27

Okay. I've been humbled by back-to-back sorry showings. Down, but not out. This could be the week that turns it all around. Or not.

Hoping your team is tasting victory Saturday night.

God bless - Jeff
