Shoppers pack stores for post-Christmas shopping and returns

Posted: Updated:

If you thought the crowds and lines of the holiday shopping season were over, think again.  Retailers are making one last push to pull in more holiday revenue.

Shoppers hit the stores Thursday to return unwanted items and to spend gift cards.  Many stores opened up early on the day after Christmas and planned to stay open late to accommodate the extra shoppers.

Ayana Cook and her mom Marcy showed up at Target Thursday, hoping to exchange a pair of Beats by Dre.

"We got the more expensive pair," said mom Marcy.  "We just wanted to go ahead and bring them back and get these.  It was really hard to find them though."

Some retailers, like Academy Sports, set up special return lanes and brought in extra staff to work them.

Retailers say this is also a big shopping day for people who got money or gift cards and wanted to buy what they didn't get for Christmas.

"We have my kids' gift cards and our gift cards, so we're coming to spend some money.  It's kind of burning a hole in my pocket, so I wanted to come spend it before the inventory runs out and everyone else gets it," said shopper Kevin Lee.

According to the National Retail Federation, the sales will continue through the end of the year.  Many shoppers actually waited until after Christmas to do their shopping, hoping to score better deals.

After lackluster numbers leading up to Christmas, stores are hoping post holiday shoppers will help them end the season on a high note.
