BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

An apartment fire that displaced multiple families on Christmas Eve has been ruled an arson, Birmingham Police confirm.

The fire broke out around 11:20 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24 at an apartment building in the 1500 block of 19th Street North. As many as 18 families were displaced by the fire, which damaged at least eight units.

The Birmingham Police Department says they have arrested a suspect in connection with the arson investigation. Police said the suspect was near seen near the apartments "watching the events unfold" as Birmingham firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze.

Officers arrested the suspect after a short foot chase. The suspect's name has not yet been released, but Birmingham police say they'll issue more information about the suspect when the warrants have been completed.

"The fire caused many of the apartment residents to become displaced before officers could complete a report for the victims," Sgt. Johnny Williams with BPD said.

Police are hoping to get in touch with everyone who was displaced by the fire. If your apartment was damaged, contact the Birmingham Police Department's Burglary Unit by calling 205-254-1782 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
