The letters "E-D-P" may not mean anything to you, but to law enforcement officers they are an increasing problem. EDP stands for "emotionally disturbed person."

These are the people who have suffered most from the $8 million in state funding cuts to mental health services in Louisiana over the last five years.

And so increasingly, law enforcement officers are coming face to face with untreated emotionally disturbed people. The outcomes of these encounters are very unpredictable and have a higher likelihood of not ending well.

Just this year, Louisiana cut millions of dollars from the Charity Hospital System which treats many EDP's, so the problem will only get worse.

Emotionally disturbed people in Louisiana deserve medical help which can prevent a potentially dangerous confrontation with a law enforcement officer. Our lawmakers in Baton Rouge need to pay attention to this.

I'm James Smith.
