COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Allen Development Inc., a real estate company based in Columbus, is facing citations and penalties after a deadly trench collapse killed two construction workers in August.

Allen Thomas and James Jackson were among a group of workers who were working in a trench at a construction site at Summit Pointe apartments when it gave away, trapping six people. Four managed to escape. A rescue team attempted to save Thomas and Jackson but they were killed by asphyxiation. Their death was ruled accidental.

After an investigation by OSHA, the company has been cited with six serious violations totaling $18,900 in penalties, and one other-than-serious violation with no monetary penalty.

The company has 15 business days to comply, contest, or request a conference with an OSHA director after receiving the citations, which were issued on Dec. 20.
