HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Alabama A&M University announced on Monday the hire of James Spady as the new head coach of the school's football team.

Bryan Hicks, the director of athletics for A&M, made the announcement.

"He represents another giant step on our journey toward excellence in athletics," Hicks said in a statement, in part, released Monday morning.

In 2008 Spady was selected by the N.C.A.A. to participate in the Expert Football Coaches Academy. He began his coaching career at the University of Texas at El Paso, and later went on to coach at North Carolina Central, South Carolina State and Grambling.

Spady has spent the past four years as the tight ends and co-offensive line coach with the University of Nevada, Reno.

A&M has scheduled a press conference for 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 3, to introduce Spady as the new coach.
