BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Law enforcement is reminding motorists to celebrate the New Year safely and they're beefing up patrols to make sure everyone gets home.

Alabama State Troopers and local police and sheriff's offices will be out in force throughout New Year's Eve. They will set up random checkpoints throughout the state and check for drunk drivers, insurance, valid licenses, and if motorists are wearing seatbelts.

Troopers emphasize that if you are going out and will be drinking, you should also have a designated driver.

"Some people feel it's OK for a driver to go out and have one or two drinks and still drive a vehicle. We highly recommend that you get a driver who doesn't drink any alcohol at all," Trooper Curtis Summerville said.

Troopers add that if you are on the road and need assistance, you can reach your local law enforcement at 9-1-1 and you can reach troopers by dialing *47.

AAA is also offering free towing for those who need a safe way home New Year's Eve. Click here for more information.
